Mounting

When selecting a screen, it’s important to understand the difference between surface mounting and inside/recessed mounting. Surface-mounted screens attach directly to the exterior wall above or around your opening. This method is ideal when you want the screen to fully cover a window or door and allows for easy installation of sidetracks. Surface mounting also provides flexibility for adjusting the unit to clear obstacles like trim, sills, or decorative features.

Inside or recessed mounting, on the other hand, positions the screen within the frame or opening itself. This approach is best when you want a clean, integrated look, with the screen fitting snugly inside the existing structure. Recessed mounting can be more precise because the screen is guided by the opening’s framework, but it requires accurate measurements to ensure proper clearance for smooth operation.

Both methods provide effective shade, privacy, or insect protection, so the choice comes down to whether you prefer a visible, adjustable installation (surface mount) or a sleek, built-in appearance (inside mount).

Additional Hardware

  • Fur Out Strips

    For Surface Mount

These are used to build the screen unit out and away from the mounting surface (like a wall or window frame).

    • Description: Color-matching, rectangular aluminum extrusions measuring 2" x 1".
    • Purpose: To clear obstacles on the mounting surface, such as door handles or decorative trim.
    • Installation: They are installed first on the mounting surface. The 2" width matches the track width.
    • Key Detail (Gap): Using these strips will create a gap at the top, along the back of the Cassette Housing. This gap is equal to the total unit width less 4". You must either order extra material to fill this gap or leave it open.
  • STD Inside Mount "L" Angle

    For Inside Mount

This component is typically used for inside mounts when the side walls are uneven.

    • Description: Powder-coated, color-matching aluminum material shaped like an "L". The length runs the entire unit drop
    • Purpose: To make the screen tracks appear plumb (perfectly vertical) when the mounting surfaces are not plumb (i.e., not straight or square).
    • Installation: The "L" angles are mounted to the non-plumb side surfaces first. The tracks are then attached to and through the "L" angle, allowing the tracks to be straightened.
    • Finishing: Matching outdoor caulk is typically used to fill in any resulting gaps.
